TROPE · WP-XL
forced proximity
One bed. One cabin. One roster, one apartment, one long storm that won't let anyone leave. Forced proximity is the engine trope — it rarely carries a book alone, it accelerates whatever else is running. Trap two people who would otherwise keep their distance in a space too small to hide in, and attraction has nowhere to go but up. The device shows up in nearly every subgenre because it works on all of them: enemies get closer, slow burns speed up, and the third-act distance feels earned. Best paired with enemies-to-lovers, hockey and sports romance, and the eternal only-one-bed.
