The review

Aphrodite has decided Psyche Dimitriou has insulted her one too many times, so she sends her son Eros, her knife in the dark, to kill her. Eros takes one look and cannot do it. Instead, he binds Psyche to him the only way that will keep her alive: marriage. The second Dark Olympus book swaps Hades and Persephone for Psyche and Eros, and it is darker and stranger than Neon Gods.

Psyche is the sister everyone underestimates: soft, image-conscious and very good at being the pleasant face of her mother's ambitions. Robert flips that by making her the strategist. While Eros reacts, Psyche plans, and the marriage turns into a partnership in survival against the most dangerous woman in Olympus.

Eros is the morally grey center. He is beautiful, deadly and trained to obey a mother who treats him as a weapon, and the book is as much about him learning to choose for himself as it is about the romance. The mother-in-law plot gives the stakes a gleeful, petty menace that Neon Gods did not have.

The heat: four peppers. The author's own content notes list explicit sex, and Robert stays in her lane of explicit, kink-adjacent scenes built on clear negotiation and consent. If Neon Gods worked for you, the temperature is the same.

Know before you start: the author's notes also flag emotional and financial abuse, body shaming in a few specific chapters, an off-page murder and guns. It reads as a standalone within the shared city of Olympus and ends happily. The worldbuilding is still sketchy, but the series is about the couples, not the map. Psyche's sisters, and Persephone and Hades, pop in, which is a treat if you read Neon Gods first.

Read it if Neon Gods hooked you. Skip it if a heroine marrying to survive is not your thing. It is a fast read, and the villainous mother-in-law alone is worth the price of admission.
