The review

A figure skater and a hockey captain forced to share ice time at Maple Hills, a fictional California university. The premise is paint-by-numbers; the execution is what made it explode. Nate is patient, deliberate, and writes the praise-kink playbook in real time. If you want spicy without the dark, this is the entry-point sports romance.

Anastasia is a perfectionist skater chasing Team USA selection with a partner who carries his own baggage. Nate is the easygoing captain of the hockey team. When a facilities mix-up forces the two teams to share one rink, the schedule-sharing becomes the whole engine: early mornings, shared ice, and two people who cannot avoid each other long enough to keep pretending they are annoyed.

Grace is good at friction that turns into care. Nate notices things about Anastasia that the people around her don't, including how hard she is on herself, and the book takes her disordered relationship with food and pressure seriously without turning into an issue novel. The friend group is loud and funny and sets up the rest of the series.

The heat: four peppers. Once the door opens, it stays open, and the scenes are frequent and explicit. The tone is playful rather than dark, with a lot of talking, checking in and praise, which is why it became the default recommendation for readers who want spicy without menace.

Know before you start: it is long for a contemporary, and the middle sags with misunderstandings before the third act tightens things up. It ends happily, and the series continues with other couples from the same friend group, starting with Wildfire. If you like it, you have a whole shelf waiting. Start here if you want to know why hockey romance took over the bestseller lists, then decide for yourself whether the hype is earned. We think it mostly is.
