Slow Burn romance
The wait is the point. Slow-burn romance holds the couple apart for most of the book: a first kiss at the halfway mark, a door that doesn't open until the last act, a hundred near misses before anyone admits anything. The trope runs on accumulated tension, so every glance and every interrupted moment raises the price of the eventual payoff. Done well, the delay makes the release land like a dam breaking. Done badly, it reads as stalling. Slow burn says nothing about heat on its own: a slow burn can end at a fade-to-black or at five peppers, which is why our spice rating sits next to the tag. Pairs with enemies-to-lovers, forbidden, and forced proximity.
