The review
Ava Chen's bright optimism collides with Alex Volkov's precision-engineered coldness when he agrees to watch over his best friend's sister. The setup is familiar, but Huang commits to the contrast: sunny heroine, ruthless billionaire, buried memories, and a relationship that keeps turning the temperature up. Come for the brother's-best-friend tension. Stay if an intensely possessive lead and high-drama reversals are exactly the point.
Huang builds the book around contrast. Ava photographs the world because she loves it; Alex Volkov treats the world like a spreadsheet he has already solved. When her brother Josh asks his best friend to keep an eye on her, the arrangement puts a sunshine heroine in close quarters with a man who claims he does not feel much of anything.
The real hook is that Alex is not hiding a soft heart so much as a plan. There is a long game running underneath the romance, tied to his past and to gaps in Ava's memory, and the reveals land in the back half with genuine force. If you like your morally grey hero to stay grey even after he falls, this delivers.
The heat: four peppers. Once the tension snaps, the scenes are frequent, explicit and possessive in the way the series is famous for. It stays on the steamy side of dark rather than tipping into true dark romance.
Know before you start: the brother's-best-friend secrecy, the age gap and the third-act betrayal are all load-bearing. It ends happily, and each Twisted book follows a different couple from the same friend group, so you can stop here or keep going. Most readers keep going. Twisted Games, the bodyguard romance that follows, is the fan favorite, and the series as a whole is the best case for Huang as the reigning queen of the possessive billionaire. Start here and see if the temperature suits you.
