The review

Poppy is the Maiden: chosen by the gods, veiled, untouchable and forbidden from almost every ordinary pleasure in life. Hawke is the new guard sworn to protect her, a man with a cocky smile and a much bigger secret. In a kingdom where the undead Craven are pressing at the walls, the Maiden starts breaking every rule she was raised to keep. From Blood and Ash is the romantasy that built one of BookTok's most devoted fandoms.

The forbidden setup is perfect romance fuel. Poppy has been told her whole life that she cannot be touched, so every small rebellion, from sneaking out to reading what she should not, feels charged. Hawke is the guard who notices her as a person rather than a symbol, and their banter is the best thing in the book.

The plot pays off with a big reveal about Hawke and about the kingdom itself, and it changes how you read everything that came before. Armentrout loves a twist, and readers who stick with the series get several. The fated-mates element surfaces gradually and becomes central later.

The heat: four peppers. It is a slow build, but once the door opens the scenes are explicit and the series only gets hotter. The tension is a big part of the spice here, especially in the first half.

Know before you start: the first third is slow and there is a lot of internal monologue. It ends on revelations that lead straight into A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, so treat it as the opening of a long saga, not a complete romance. We could not find an author-published content-warning list. If you love a guard romance and a big twist, you will be up all night.

Read it if you love forbidden romance and long fantasy sagas. Skip it if slow openings and a lot of internal monologue test your patience. Fans say the series hits its stride in the second book, so give it that far before you decide.
