The review
Persephone runs from a dangerous engagement and crosses into the lower city, where Hades offers sanctuary with terms attached. This modern myth retelling is less interested in ancient Greece than in power, reputation, and two people turning a public bargain into something private. The worldbuilding stays sleek, the consent is explicit, and the chemistry arrives early. A reliable next step for readers who want fantasy atmosphere without waiting three books for the door to open.
Olympus here is a city, the gods are titles held by the city's most powerful families, and Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, about to be married off to Zeus to cement her mother's ambitions. Hades is supposed to be a myth the upper city tells to scare itself. When Persephone runs and crosses the river into his territory, she finds out he is very real and very interested in hurting Zeus.
Their deal is simple: sanctuary in exchange for using her to humiliate the man who wants her. What follows is a power-exchange romance built on negotiation, which gives the spice its frame. Hades is guarded and controlled, Persephone is sharper than anyone gives her credit for, and the dynamic between them is the whole show.
The heat: four peppers. The book is explicit and kink-forward, with exhibitionism and dominance woven into the plot rather than tacked on, and every step is spelled out and agreed to. That combination of filth and clear consent is the Katee Robert signature.
Know before you start: the worldbuilding is a sketch, not a map. If you want a fully realized fantasy world, look elsewhere. If you want a fast, hot myth retelling with a satisfying ending, it delivers. Each Dark Olympus book follows a new couple, so it reads cleanly on its own. If the Hades and Persephone dynamic works for you, Electric Idol takes the same city and turns it toward Psyche and Eros with even more danger in the setup.
