The review
Georgie wakes up on a frozen alien planet, finds out the inhabitants are eight-foot blue barbarians, and the very next thing that happens is one of them claims her. Unironic best-in-class for monster-romance/sci-fi-mate-bond. The series runs well past a dozen books, and the warmth holds the whole way. If your spice tolerance is calibrated for it, start here.
The setup is pure pulp. A group of women are abducted by aliens, end up stranded on a frozen world when the plan goes wrong, and discover the planet's only other residents are tall, horned, blue hunters who survive the cold thanks to a symbiont called a khui. Georgie, practical and stubborn, goes looking for help and finds Vektal, the tribe's leader, instead.
The khui is the trope engine. When it chooses a mate for its host it resonates, an audible, physical bond that settles the romance question on day one. That makes this fated mates in its purest form, and it frees the book to spend its time on survival, culture clash and a hero who is endlessly, earnestly devoted.
The heat: five peppers. It is explicit, frequent and unashamedly built around the fated-mates and breeding-kink fantasy, written with more warmth and humor than you would expect. Dixon never winks at the premise, which is exactly why it works.
Know before you start: book one is short and the writing is lean; later books get longer and richer as the tribe grows. Each book follows a new couple, so this one wraps up on its own, but the tribe's story runs straight through the series and the cameos land better if you read in order. If book one charms you, the series has enough couples to last you all winter, and the found-family warmth only deepens as the human women and the tribe build a life together.
