The review
Three years ago, Rika's testimony sent Michael Crist's friends to prison. Now they're out, Michael's younger brother (her boyfriend) has shipped off to the military, and the four of them have decided the girl who ruined their lives owes a debt. Corrupt is the book that put Thunder Bay on the dark-romance map: a revenge plot dressed in Devil's Night masks, with a heroine who gets less afraid the harder they push.
Douglas writes Rika as someone who has always been fascinated by the boys she was told to fear, and that is the lever the book pulls on. The revenge plot is real and it is ugly, but the story is really about Rika discovering that she wants the danger, the masks and the chaos more than the safe life she was handed. By the back half she is less prey than a fifth member of the crew.
Michael is the brooding center: older, a pro basketball player, cold to her for years and suddenly very interested in what she will do when nobody is watching. The dynamic is obsession dressed up as contempt, and the dual point of view lets you see how long the obsession has been running.
The heat: five peppers. The scenes are explicit, frequent and built around fear play, chase scenes and consent that is blurred on purpose. This is a book that turns danger into foreplay and does not apologize for it.
Know before you start: Amazon lists it as a standalone dark romance with no cliffhanger, and it ends with Rika and Michael together. The Devil's Night series continues with the other Horsemen, starting with Hideaway, so you can stop here or keep going. Go in knowing the hero and his friends do genuinely terrible things before anyone earns redemption.
Read it if you want the dark-romance classic everyone else is compared to. Skip it if revenge-driven cruelty from the hero is a dealbreaker.
