The review
Aria Scuderi was promised to Luca Vitiello when she was fifteen, a political marriage meant to keep the peace between the Chicago Outfit and the New York Famiglia. Now she is eighteen, the wedding is here, and Luca is known as the Vice for very good reasons. Bound by Honor is the arranged-marriage mafia romance that launched Cora Reilly's sprawling Born in Blood world, and it is still where most readers start.
The book is about fear turning into trust. Aria has been raised to be a beautiful bargaining chip, and Luca is a man whose reputation for violence precedes him into every room. Reilly spends real time on the wedding, the traditions and the brutal expectations of mafia marriage, and the slow discovery that her husband is capable of restraint is the emotional core.
Luca is the classic mafia hero: protective, possessive and terrifying to everyone but her. The world around them, with its codes, rivalries and siblings who get their own books later, is drawn with enough detail to make the danger feel close. Aria's sisters and Luca's brother Matteo add warmth and set up the series.
The heat: three peppers. The door opens, but the book takes its time getting there, and the intimate scenes are less frequent and less explicit than in later Born in Blood books. The darkness here comes from the world and its violence more than from the bedroom.
Know before you start: it was written as an early self-published romance and the prose is straightforward rather than lush. It ends happily for Aria and Luca. The series continues with other couples from the same families, so book one stands on its own, but readers who love it tend to read all of them. If you want mafia romance with a slower build than The Maddest Obsession, start here.
