The review
Gianna hides panic attacks behind a carefree, reckless front. Christian Allister is a federal agent who runs his entire life on control, discipline and strict rules, and he has been watching her for years. Their story plays out against the New York mafia world of Danielle Lori's Made series: a bickering, obsessive, slow-detonating romance that BookTok still cites as a gold standard for the 'he was obsessed with her first' hero.
Christian is the draw. He is cold, meticulous, slightly unhinged about order, and quietly devoted to a woman he has decided he should not want. Lori makes his control the joke and the tension: Gianna is chaos, and every scene where she disrupts his carefully arranged life is a small war.
Gianna is the better-written character. Her bravado covers years of fear and loss in a world that treats women as property, and the book takes her anxiety seriously instead of using it as decoration. The enemies-to-lovers arc is really two people who have both built armor learning to put it down.
The heat: four peppers. The door opens late and opens wide, with explicit scenes and a possessive streak that justifies the title. It is darker in tone than Twisted or Kings of Sin, but less violent than true dark romance like Corrupt.
Know before you start: it is book two of the Made series and follows a different couple from The Sweetest Oblivion, so it can be read on its own, although characters cross over. It ends happily. The author's website is no longer online, and we could not find a published content-warning list. If you love Christian, readers recommend going back for The Sweetest Oblivion next.
Read it if you love a hero who was obsessed first and hid it best. Skip it if slow builds frustrate you. Fans rank Christian among the great mafia-adjacent heroes, and the payoff for his restraint is worth the wait. This is the book people mean when they say the obsessed hero trope done right.
